My friend Ela had a great idea last year. Having worked privately with families for some time, she'd figured out that many employers' benefit plans covered SLP services up to either $300 or $500. She wanted families to see the most progress they could for their kids with that money, and thus the idea of speech sound packages was born. She and I have been hard at work for the last few months developing a set of materials that, with coaching from an SLP, would allow a parent or caregiver to do effective and fun speech sound practice at home with their child. Each package includes a number of in-person coaching sessions, but also a binder full of goodies—basics of how to work on sounds, activity ideas, book suggestions, colour game boards and target word cards... even game pieces and dice! It's the full meal deal.
The activities and approaches in these packages would be suitable for kids aged 3-8. They are intended for kids who have been diagnosed with an articulation delay. That would typically be children who substitute one sound for another (e.g., t instead of k, or w instead of l). The best sound to work on will be one that the child is stimulable for (i.e., they are able to say the sound on its own when you show them how to do it and give them cues). If you're not sure which sounds your child is struggling with, or which sound would be best to work on first, we're happy to get the information we need to make a recommendation. Each package does allow for a 45 minute initial consultation, which could include some informal assessment. After that, you are free to schedule the coaching sessions at your convenience. You will see the most progress if you are able to practice a few minutes each day with your child. 5-15 minutes is often all it takes to complete an activity, but the consistency of daily practice (and even a couple of shorter activities in a day) is crucial. We have several sounds available: k, g, f, sh, l, and s-blends. If you think this might be a good fit for your family, you can contact me or Ela Stelck (http://sneakyspeech.com/) to get started!
