About Us

Unison Speech-Language Pathology is a private speech-language pathology practice serving preschool and school-aged children in Edmonton, AB and area.

Our Core Values

CLIENT-CENTERED CARE
  • We respect clients and families as experts on their own experiences and needs, and encourage them to take the lead in decision-making.
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE
  • When we make clinical decisions, we consider current research (i.e., what is the scientific evidence supporting one option or another), clinical experience (i.e., what do we know from our experience with other clients), and client values and priorities (i.e., what is important to you as an individual).

NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING CARE
  • Neurodiversity refers to brain differences as naturally occurring variations in humans.  Neurodivergence (i.e., having a brain that works in ways other than what’s seen as “typical”) is not seen as ‘disordered’ or needing to be ‘fixed’, but rather this diversity is welcomed.
  • Neurodiversity-affirming care means working with an individual’s strengths to help them achieve their goals, while respecting their brain’s diversity and helping them to exist authentically as themselves.
ANTI-RACISM AND INCLUSION
  • Anti-racism means actively working against racism by identifying situations and policies where racism or inequity may exist, and working to change those systems.  On an individual level, this means acknowledging our own biases and working towards cultural humility in our practice.
  • Home languages are honoured and encouraged.
  • At Unison SLP, everyone is welcome as they are, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, culture, religion, ability, or age.
COMMUNITY
  • When we live and work in community, we value the contributions of every individual, knowing that everyone has something to teach us.  We know that we need to be supported by others, and that we are better when we work together.  We help others when we can, by sharing time and resources.  We strive to lift others up, knowing that when one thrives, we all thrive.
PLAY
  • Play is the work of childhood, and the best learning takes place within the context of play.  Building trusting relationships that allow children to play, explore, be creative, use their strengths, and take the lead is the foundation of what we do.

EXPERIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY

Since graduating with my Masters in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Alberta in 2008, I have worked with preschool, kindergarten, and school-age children in a number of settings, including Early Education, inclusive preschool and kindergarten classrooms, and one-on-one or group therapy.  I have experience with functional and standardized assessments for speech and language skills.  I have worked with children with a range of speech, language, and communication needs.

As a musician, I have studied piano, voice, and oboe, and completed a Bachelor of Music degree in oboe performance at McGill University. I’ve worked as a freelance oboist and oboe teacher, and have sung in a number of choirs, including Òran and Chronos Vocal Ensemble in Edmonton.  I am thrilled to be able to offer Music Together Within Therapy.  I believe music is a powerful tool to support speech, language, and communication skills.  I also know that music, like communication, has a beautiful way of building connections and bringing people together.

Territorial Acknowledgement

Unison Speech-Language Pathology is located on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional and ancestral lands of many indigenous peoples including the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Nakota Sioux, and Saulteaux, and homeland of the Métis.  We acknowledge the history of colonization on this land, and the need to actively work against the impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities.  We respect the languages, cultures, and knowledge systems of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit nations.  We acknowledge that our allyship is a work in progress, and that there is much to learn.
