Well, I've been gone from this space for a few months, and there is a very cute reason for that—our family welcomed a little boy at the end of January, and I've been on maternity leave, squeezing in all the baby snuggles I can! I am so looking forward to working with some individual clients and some groups starting in September, though! For the last couple months I've been supervising SLP students at the University of Alberta, and watching their first clinical experience and all their great ideas has been so inspiring! I can't wait to get back at it. My schedule for individual clients starting in September will be: Tuesday daytimes Thursday afternoons/evenings Saturday mornings I will also be running a Music Together Within Therapy group on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. More info on that coming soon! If you're interested in setting up individual services or registering for a MTWT group, please get in touch! And please do be patient with me if my response time continues to be a bit slow... I'm easing myself back into work, always trying to balance all these things I love. - Tegan

There has been a time change for the Music Together Within Therapy class starting in September 2017. Classes will now be from 10:30–11:30 a.m. on Saturdays (moved from an afternoon time to hopefully better accommodate kiddos who nap)!
The semester will run from September 23–November 25 at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church (near Southgate). Schedule, location, and rates can be found here. If you're already thinking about fall activities, I've posted the Music Together Within Therapy group schedule for the fall. Classes will run Saturday afternoons on the South side starting in September. As always, tuition will include a home visit in preparation for the class, 10 group classes, high-quality materials, and a small group setting. All the details can be found here: Music Together Within Therapy Class schedule and locations Registration form If you have any questions (or would like to see alternate times/locations), please contact me! Registration is now open for spring semester of Music Together Within Therapy groups! So, what speech, language, or communication skills can we work on in a music and movement program?
Visit www.unisonSLP.com for details and to register!
Please note: iIf you are interested in registering but the posted time/day does not work for you, please message me, as I may be able to open more classes if there is enough interest. Winter semester of Music Together Within Therapy (to support speech, language, and communication!) will begin this weekend! There are still limited spaces available, and it's not to late to get in on the action. Spring semester will start in April, for another 10 sessions of great music and fun.
Come join us for 10 classes of singing, dancing, instruments, and fun! While your child is jamming and grooving, they'll also be bolstering their speech, language, and communication skills. And, you will be learning how to integrate speech and language learning at home!
There's lots more information here, on the website, and I'm adding all the time. Come see what it's all about! I'm so excited to announce that, starting in January 2017, I'll be offering Music Together Within Therapy groups! All the fun and joyful music making of a Music Together family class, but with a focus on parent education, coaching, strategies and supports to target speech and language skills. Lots more info to come!
With the arrival of October, not only do we have our first snow to contend with, but it would seem that cold and flu germs have started making the rounds as well. When I visit your house for a speech-language pathology session, I usually bring toys and books to use as part of our activities. These materials do get sanitized as much as is possible and practical, however the best way to prevent the spread of germs will be with a hand-washing habit. Please ask, help, or remind your child to was their hands with soap right before seeing me.
As always, there is no charge if you need to cancel a session due to illness, so please use the same criteria you would when deciding whether or not to send your child to school, when deciding whether to keep an appointment with me. Happy fall, and be well! My friend Ela had a great idea last year. Having worked privately with families for some time, she'd figured out that many employers' benefit plans covered SLP services up to either $300 or $500. She wanted families to see the most progress they could for their kids with that money, and thus the idea of speech sound packages was born. She and I have been hard at work for the last few months developing a set of materials that, with coaching from an SLP, would allow a parent or caregiver to do effective and fun speech sound practice at home with their child. Each package includes a number of in-person coaching sessions, but also a binder full of goodies—basics of how to work on sounds, activity ideas, book suggestions, colour game boards and target word cards... even game pieces and dice! It's the full meal deal.
The activities and approaches in these packages would be suitable for kids aged 3-8. They are intended for kids who have been diagnosed with an articulation delay. That would typically be children who substitute one sound for another (e.g., t instead of k, or w instead of l). The best sound to work on will be one that the child is stimulable for (i.e., they are able to say the sound on its own when you show them how to do it and give them cues). If you're not sure which sounds your child is struggling with, or which sound would be best to work on first, we're happy to get the information we need to make a recommendation. Each package does allow for a 45 minute initial consultation, which could include some informal assessment. After that, you are free to schedule the coaching sessions at your convenience. You will see the most progress if you are able to practice a few minutes each day with your child. 5-15 minutes is often all it takes to complete an activity, but the consistency of daily practice (and even a couple of shorter activities in a day) is crucial. We have several sounds available: k, g, f, sh, l, and s-blends. If you think this might be a good fit for your family, you can contact me or Ela Stelck (http://sneakyspeech.com/) to get started!
